I arrived in Istanbul in the middle of a political crisis. On the weekend when I arrived there was a referendum that changed the political system of Turkey and the security forces were in everywhere. Even though all country was in a state of emergency, the people tried to maintain a relatively normal life.
When I walked on Istiklal Street, the shopping heart of Istanbul, I could see several street musician side by side with the police force. Then, I started to pay attention to the music scene of this neighborhood and found a cluster of music stores, instruments dealers and manufacturer.
There is a dozen of small stores, teachers, music studios, luthiers and, of course, street musicians. They are on five or six blocks near of Galata Tower, one of the main tourist point of Istanbul. It’s possible to find since the typicals Turkish instrumental until the heavy metal guitars.
Eu cheguei em Istambul no meio de uma crise política. No fim de semana que eu cheguei houve um referendo que mudou o sistema político da Turquia e as forças de segurança estavam em todos os lugares. Apesar de todo o país estar em estado de emergência, a população tentava manter uma vida relativamente normal.
Enquanto eu caminhava na rua Istiklal, o coração comercial de Istambul, eu pude ver vários músicos de rua ao lado do aparato policial. Então, eu comecei a prestar atenção na cena musical da vizinhança e achei um conjunto de lojas de músicas, vendedores e fabricantes de instumentos.
Há dezenas de pequenas lojas, professores, estúdios, luthiers e, claro, músicos de rua. Eles estão em cinco ou seis quarteirões próximo a Torre Galata, um dos principais pontos turísticos de Istambul. É possível encontrar desde os típicos instumentos turcos até guitarras de heavy metal.
